State prosecutors in South Carolina have filed a formal objection to Alex Murdaugh’s request to relocate his trial to Charleston County, arguing that the defense’s insistence on the coastal city creates significant operational and budgetary obstacles. In a filing submitted Wednesday, officials characterized the defense position as both logistically unfeasible and prohibitively costly, urging the court to deny the motion outright.
Prosecutors detailed numerous practical barriers to holding the trial in Charleston, including severe downtown congestion, limited parking infrastructure, and the seasonal influx of tourists and visitors during spring months. The state also warned that hotel accommodations in the historic area would cost substantially more than other potential venues, with prices potentially doubling or tripling during peak season and Masters week traffic.
Environmental factors further complicate matters, according to the filing, as spring storms and king tides frequently flood the downtown district and disrupt normal court operations. State officials argued that these cumulative challenges make Charleston the most difficult location in South Carolina for a trial of this magnitude.
The defense originally sought a venue change based on pretrial publicity surrounding Murdaugh’s first trial, along with concerns about local family connections and courthouse integrity issues involving the Colleton County Clerk of Court. Prosecutors countered that the adjacent county fails to address the core rationale behind relocation requests and noted the state would consider reasonable alternatives such as Spartanburg, York, or Florence counties.
Murdaugh’s trial is tentatively scheduled to begin in April 2027. A pretrial hearing is set for Friday at 10 a.m. in the Lexington County Courthouse.
