Rep. Tom Tiffany secured the Republican Party’s gubernatorial nomination in Wisconsin on Tuesday, defeating medical service technician Andy Manske in the primary. The conservative House Freedom Caucus member, who carries the endorsement of President Donald Trump, now advances to the general election in a race considered a major pickup opportunity for Republicans. Tiffany emphasized lowering property taxes, controlling utility costs, and preserving Wisconsin’s values in his primary victory statement.
Tiffany is positioned to face state Rep. Francesca Hong in November, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America who is expected to secure her party’s nomination. The winner will assume the governor’s office vacated by Democrat Tony Evers, who chose not to pursue a third term. Political analysts view the contest as one of the most competitive gubernatorial races on the 2026 map.
Hong’s platform centers on guaranteed paid leave, raising the state minimum wage from $7.25 to $20 per hour, and implementing a temporary moratorium on artificial intelligence data center construction. She has faced criticism over older social media posts advocating police defunding and abolishment, though she now disavows those positions and emphasizes her commitment to public safety.
A resurfaced 2020 post in which Hong called for “canceling Thanksgiving” to protest colonialism drew national attention last week. Hong later characterized the comments as reflective of her past evolution and said she now considers Thanksgiving her favorite holiday. Pro-GOP super PACs invested millions supporting Hong during the primary, viewing her as the weakest Democratic candidate.
Before the primary, Tiffany declared Wisconsin would serve as “the firewall” against socialism, framing the race in ideological terms. The former dairy farmer stressed his authenticity and willingness to engage voters despite disagreements on specific policy positions.
