Brad Pitt has disclosed that he returned to alcohol consumption after maintaining seven years of sobriety, marking a significant shift in his personal recovery journey. Speaking with Esquire for its September cover story, the acclaimed performer discussed the circumstances surrounding his relapse and how his relationship with drinking has evolved since resuming the habit.
The actor emphasized that his current drinking patterns differ substantially from his previous behavior, characterizing his consumption as measured and deliberate. Pitt noted that he had become overconfident on several occasions before recognizing the practice was unhealthy for him in significant quantities, prompting him to reassess his approach.
Pitt’s remarks emerged as he examined painful chapters from his recent past, including the 2016 divorce proceedings he initiated with former spouse Angelina Jolie. The “F1” star acknowledged that his prominence and professional achievements have not shielded him from personal turmoil and ongoing struggles.
The multiple Oscar winner spoke candidly about a particularly dark period when emotional anguish felt nearly insurmountable, though he insisted he never seriously contemplated suicide. He described one specific moment when he experienced profound suicidal thoughts, telling the magazine that the pain created an overwhelming desire for relief and escape.
Despite his struggles, Pitt reflected on the privilege inherent in his life circumstances, stating flatly: “Like, listen: This s–t ain’t easy. And you’re talking to a guy who won the lottery.”
Pitt also addressed grief’s profound psychological impact, describing it as leaving both a void and unexpected beauty in its wake. He reflected on his fifth decade, expressing regret about not pursuing more ambitions during that period and encouraging others to act urgently on their desires.
