Tarik Skubal has become an unlikely focal point in Major League Baseball discussions following his mid-season trade from the Detroit Tigers to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The pitcher, who spent his entire career with Detroit and developed into one of baseball’s elite performers over the past four seasons, will become a free agent after this season and is poised to command a significant salary on the open market.
The Tigers faced a difficult decision in July when the team’s record deteriorated despite a 2025 playoff appearance and significant offseason spending. Rather than risk losing Skubal for only draft pick compensation, Detroit accepted Los Angeles’ trade offer for top prospects and years of control. Skubal acknowledged the pain of departing, telling Pardon My Take that saying goodbye to teammates who are his closest friends proved unexpectedly emotional for someone who rarely cries.
Despite his trade, Skubal indicated strong interest in negotiating a return to Detroit once free agency begins in November. He expressed regret that the Tigers’ season unraveled after the organization signed Framber Valdez, Kenley Jansen, and re-signed Jack Flaherty and Justin Verlander, describing the roster as championship-caliber entering the campaign.
Experts anticipate Skubal could command between $300 million and $400 million in free agency, making the open market substantially more valuable than any extension the Dodgers might offer during their exclusive negotiating window. Los Angeles has rarely retained mid-season trade acquisitions, having previously allowed Yu Darvish, Manny Machado, and Max Scherzer to depart as free agents, suggesting Tigers ownership would retain realistic opportunities to re-sign Skubal.
