Hawaii Republican Contractor Nominated to Challenge Incumbent Democratic Governor

Gary Cordery, a Hawaii-based contractor, secured the Republican Party’s gubernatorial nomination Saturday after prevailing over business owner Ken Fujiyama in the primary election. Cordery will advance to face incumbent Democratic Governor Josh Green in November’s general election, though political analysts view the race as substantially favoring the sitting governor.

The Cook Political Report classifies the matchup as Solid Democratic with a Partisan Voting Index of D+13, reflecting the state’s electoral lean. Republicans have not held Hawaii’s governor’s office since Linda Lingle’s departure in 2010, representing a 14-year drought for the party in statewide executive elections.

Cordery confronts formidable obstacles beyond Hawaii’s Democratic voting patterns. Green boasts a 56 percent approval rating and has raised approximately $3.5 million in campaign funds, dwarfing Cordery’s $313,000 in contributions, according to Honolulu Civil Beat.

The Republican candidate’s platform emphasizes reducing Hawaii’s elevated cost of living, restructuring the education system, and combating governmental corruption. Cordery proposes constructing 15,000 homes priced between $400,000 and $600,000 for working families, utilizing state-owned parcels for fee-simple housing while expediting permits and opening additional residential land.

Additional proposals include repealing the state General Excise Tax on food and medicine while freezing property taxes for retirees. Cordery contends that Hawaii’s $20.5 billion budget serving 1.4 million residents demonstrates fiscal mismanagement compared to New Hampshire’s $7.75 billion budget for an identical population.
