Tommy John, the iconic former Yankees pitcher whose groundbreaking 1974 elbow surgery fundamentally transformed baseball medicine, released a poignant farewell statement to fans Saturday as the franchise observed Old-Timers’ Day. The 83-year-old Hall of Famer disclosed that he has been battling undisclosed health issues while residing in Florida. His message marked a significant moment for a player whose medical legacy has extended far beyond his own successful career.
In his prepared statement, John expressed gratitude to the Yankees organization and the Steinbrenner family for providing him the opportunity to address supporters one final time. He also thanked the countless admirers who followed his 26-year professional journey across multiple teams, emphasizing the profound personal significance of their loyalty throughout the decades.
John credited Dr. Jobe with restoring his pitching arm and enabling him to continue his career following the revolutionary surgical procedure. The operation subsequently became the template for orthopedic interventions that have preserved the playing longevity of numerous elite pitchers in subsequent generations, fundamentally altering the sport’s approach to arm injuries.
After missing the entire 1975 season, John demonstrated the surgery’s efficacy by winning more than 160 games in the years that followed. He compiled a career 3.34 ERA with 2,245 strikeouts across eight Yankees seasons and also played for the White Sox, Dodgers, Angels, Indians, and Athletics.
