ICE Arrests Over 1,200 Immigrants in Atlanta Sweep, More Than 700 With Criminal Records

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers conducted a major enforcement operation in the Atlanta metropolitan area that netted more than 1,200 arrests, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Of those apprehended, DHS identified 720 individuals with prior convictions or pending charges related to criminal activity.

Marcos Charles, executive associate director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, detailed the scope of offenses during a television appearance, noting that agents removed individuals convicted of sex crimes, assault, battery, driving under the influence, and domestic violence from communities. He emphasized that the operation targeted people whose unlawful presence in the United States compounded their criminal liability.

The initiative, formally designated “Operation Safe Community – Atlanta,” prioritized the removal of individuals with documented histories of criminal conduct. Charles stated that ICE personnel continue similar enforcement efforts nationwide, with agents modifying their operational tactics in response to public demonstrations and alleged interference with arrest procedures.

Among those arrested was a Mexican national with prior convictions for methamphetamine distribution conspiracy and intoxicated driving, as well as an El Salvadorian national with documented arrests for domestic violence, child cruelty, and disorderly conduct.

The Atlanta operation coincides with record enforcement activity across the agency. ICE reported approximately 51,000 immigration arrests in July, the agency’s highest monthly total on record, surpassing June’s figure of 43,000 arrests.
