Two Teens Recount Harrowing Moments Trapped Upside Down on New Jersey Boardwalk Ride

Two teenagers have recounted a frightening incident in early July when a mechanical malfunction left more than a dozen riders dangling upside down on a popular boardwalk attraction in Ocean City, New Jersey. Charlotte Hacker and Emilia Gordon, both 13 years old, were passengers aboard the Wipe Out ride at Playland’s Castaway Cove when the equipment unexpectedly stopped while suspended in mid-rotation. The girls described the experience as feeling far longer than the five to seven minutes they actually remained in that position.

Gordon and Hacker had visited the boardwalk the evening after Independence Day to celebrate Gordon’s upcoming 13th birthday. The pair, who were seated adjacent to each other, opted to ride the Wipe Out attraction because it was recently installed at the venue. The ride operates as a pendulum that repeatedly inverts passengers while the cabin rotates, but this particular evening it malfunctioned catastrophically.

Both girls reported feeling intense physical distress while trapped in the inverted position. Gordon stated she feared losing consciousness due to blood pressure changes, while Hacker said she worried the restraining bars would disengage. The teenagers attempted to maintain conversation as a coping mechanism to manage their anxiety during the ordeal.

Family members observing from ground level experienced their own panic as they watched the ride remain stationary with passengers overhead. Once operators successfully restarted the mechanism, the ride continued its full cycle before riders were eventually allowed to exit several minutes later. Neither girl reported suffering injuries from the incident.

The amusement park refunded ride tickets to the affected passengers, though the teenagers felt the compensation fell short of addressing their traumatic experience. Gordon noted she received five tickets back while Hacker received three, despite the severity of the malfunction. The Wipe Out remained operational following the incident, with some individuals choosing to board the attraction after the stranded riders disembarked.

The cause of the mechanical failure remains unexplained. Officials from the Ocean City Fire Department, Ocean City Police Department, the ride operator, and the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs have been contacted for additional information regarding the malfunction.
