President Donald Trump welcomed more than 120 members of Team USA’s Winter Olympic and Paralympic delegations to the White House on Thursday, recognizing their exceptional achievements at the Milano Cortina Games held earlier this year. The athletes, drawn from a larger contingent of 300 competing for the nation, delivered unprecedented results for American winter sports.
The United States brought home 57 medals from the Winter Olympics, including 12 gold medals—the most gold medals ever won by the nation at a single Winter Games. Additionally, Team USA captured 33 total medals, marking the most medals won by American competitors at a Winter Olympics held outside North America.
American Paralympic athletes contributed significantly to the medal count, with 72 competitors earning 24 medals across five sports, including 13 gold medals. Trump specifically highlighted the men’s sled hockey team’s achievement in claiming their fifth consecutive gold medal, calling it “one of the greatest dynasties in all of international sports.”
Trump acknowledged both the men’s and women’s Olympic hockey teams, each of which defeated Canada in overtime to claim gold. He noted that forward Joy Dunne and forward Abbey Murphy were among the attendees, and he took time to recognize their contributions during his remarks.
Earlier this year, Trump had already honored men’s hockey goaltender Connor Hellebuyck with the Presidential Medal of Freedom during his State of the Union address, days after the team’s victory. Trump had invited the women’s hockey team to a separate White House celebration following public backlash over his initial comments regarding their attendance.
The president presented the assembled athletes with Team USA varsity jackets and commemorative shoes. He also expressed enthusiasm about hosting the Winter Games in Salt Lake City in 2034, while noting that the 2030 Winter and Paralympic Games will take place in the French Alps.
