Former Major League pitcher Collin Balester, who played for the Nationals, Tigers and Reds between 2008 and 2015, offered his assessment of Yan’s unorthodox approach. Balester acknowledged that celebratory antics are more common in winter leagues throughout Mexico and the Dominican Republic, but expressed surprise at the extremity of Yan’s performances. He noted that such elaborate displays are relatively unprecedented in professional baseball.

From a health perspective, Balester raised practical concerns about the long-term consequences of Yan’s signature celebration. The repeated jumping and landing involved in the split maneuver could potentially lead to serious knee injuries over an extended career, prompting Balester to suggest that team management might consider discouraging the practice for injury-prevention reasons.

Despite these reservations, Balester believes Yan’s flashy demeanor could ultimately prove advantageous. He suggested that opposing hitters, irritated by the celebratory displays following strikeouts, may overcommit at the plate attempting to retaliate, which could result in additional outs. The psychological edge, Balester argued, might offset traditional concerns about showing up opponents.
