Wisconsin Pilot Helicopters to Cabela’s to Avoid 45-Minute Drive

A Wisconsin man opted for an unconventional commute Saturday evening when he piloted his helicopter approximately 50 miles from Rosendale to a Cabela’s outlet in Richfield rather than endure the roughly 45-minute drive. Dennis Pipping, 69, completed the journey in about 20 minutes, touching down in a sparsely populated section of the retail store’s expansive parking lot to purchase bowhunting equipment.

The arrival drew immediate attention from local authorities after a bystander reported the helicopter landing. Washington County sheriff’s deputies responded to investigate but found no emergency, criminal conduct, or safety violations. Pipping held valid pilot credentials, had complied with Federal Aviation Administration requirements, and executed the landing without incident.

Before departing, Pipping had contacted the Cabela’s location to notify staff of his arrival and conducted a preliminary flyover of the parking lot to assess landing feasibility. He traveled with a neighbor and selected a section of the lot devoid of parked vehicles, ensuring an unobstructed touchdown.

When questioned about his rationale, Pipping offered a straightforward explanation: “Why would you drive if you can fly there in a helicopter?” The sheriff’s office ultimately characterized the incident as a “unique way to make a shopping trip,” with no arrests or citations issued.
