A coordinated law enforcement operation spanning two weeks across Mississippi concluded with 70 arrests of individuals accused of child exploitation crimes and sex offenses, federal authorities announced. The initiative, designated “Operation Muddy Waters,” brought together resources from multiple federal agencies, state law enforcement, and local police departments to identify and apprehend offenders believed to pose threats to children.
Among those arrested were individuals accused of crossing state lines to commit sexual abuse, distributing child sexual abuse material, and establishing inappropriate contact with minors through social media platforms. The Department of Homeland Security identified several arrestees, including Cristian Abel Argueta Giron, an illegal immigrant from Honduras accused of traveling from Tennessee to Mississippi for illicit sexual conduct with a minor, and Rahul Mondal, an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh on a student visa at the University of Alabama charged with communicating with a 14-year-old male online.
The operation also resulted in the arrest of previously convicted sex offenders in violation of registration requirements. Jose Arevalo Garcia and Enrique Bravo Gonzalez, both illegal immigrants from Mexico, faced charges related to non-compliance with sex offender registration and prior convictions for sexual offenses in 2010 and 2022 respectively.
Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch highlighted a significant success during the operation: the rescue of one child from an active sextortion scheme. “The most important number coming from this operation is the one child victim that was saved from a sextortion scheme in progress,” Fitch said in a statement, emphasizing the collaborative effectiveness of multi-agency law enforcement partnerships.
The enforcement effort involved the U.S. Attorney’s Offices for both Mississippi districts, the state Attorney General’s Office, the Department of Public Safety, the U.S. Marshals Service, and sheriff’s offices in Marshall, DeSoto, Harrison, Pearl River, and Forrest counties. Matthew Reidell, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations Gulfport, stated the operation demonstrated HSI’s commitment to holding offenders accountable and protecting children from online predators.
