The Church of St. Andrew, located on Staten Island, has announced plans to retire its 118-year-old pipe organ and transition to a digital instrument. The current organ, which contains 1,000 pipes, will be replaced with a modern digital system that church officials say will be considerably more economical to maintain and operate.
The decision reflects broader challenges facing religious institutions seeking to balance preservation of historical assets with practical financial considerations. Digital organs have advanced significantly in recent years, offering comparable sound quality to traditional pipe instruments while eliminating ongoing maintenance costs associated with aging mechanical systems.
