A Portland Fire fan became the center of unwanted attention during a WNBA matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday after a half-court shot competition sponsored by Toyota ended in spectacular failure. The promotional opportunity, which typically offers winners a new vehicle, instead delivered one of the more memorable mishaps captured on a professional sports broadcast in recent memory.
The fan’s attempt fell drastically short of the intended target, traveling barely past the free throw line before the participant lost his footing and skidded across the court surface. Despite his apparent all-out effort, the shot missed the backboard entirely and sent him sprawling in front of the assembled crowd, an outcome that left little doubt about the intensity of his attempt.
One notable detail from the incident involved the fan’s eyeglasses, which remarkably remained secured throughout the mishap. Had the spectacles dislodged during the fall, observers noted the embarrassment factor could have escalated considerably for the Portland-area resident.
The Fire ultimately fell to the Sparks 106-101 that evening, making the fan’s misadventure one of several disappointments for the home team during the contest.
