Ottawa Senators head coach Travis Green acknowledged surprise at one of the offseason’s most dramatic moves when the team dealt captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers. The trade shocked the hockey world, particularly given Tkachuk’s recent public statements affirming his commitment to the franchise.
During an appearance on the 100% Hockey podcast with hosts Daren Millard and John Shannon, Green recalled the moment General Manager Steve Staios informed him of the pending trade roughly three to four weeks after the season ended. The coach admitted his initial reaction included elements of both surprise and frustration at losing a cornerstone player.
Green, who previously led the Vancouver Canucks and New Jersey Devils, explained that the Senators’ promising young core, which featured Tkachuk prominently, factored into his decision to accept the Ottawa position. The unexpected departure of such a significant piece left him disappointed about the circumstances surrounding the deal.
Despite the loss of Tkachuk, Ottawa showed progress by reaching the playoffs this season before falling to eventual champion Carolina Hurricanes. The organization has since bolstered its roster with acquisitions including Andre Burakovsky and William Eklund, while retaining key contributors Tim Stützle, Drake Batherson, Shane Pinto, Jake Sanderson and Dylan Cozens. Veteran forward Claude Giroux also re-signed on a one-year contract last month.
