Ahkello Witherspoon has ended his NFL career at age 31, the Washington Commanders announced Tuesday. The team placed the cornerback on the Reserve/Retired List and promptly signed cornerback Fabian Moreau as his replacement on the defensive roster.
Witherspoon informed the Commanders of his decision on Tuesday morning, just one day after participating in team practice on Monday, according to ESPN reporting. Despite inking a one-year contract worth $1.41 million with Washington in May, the defensive back will not appear in games for the franchise this season.
The Colorado product enjoyed a standout collegiate career, appearing in 37 games where he accumulated 71 tackles, three interceptions, 27 passes defended, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. During his final year at Colorado, Witherspoon led all Division I football with 22 passes defended, earning recognition as one of the nation’s premier defensive backs.
San Francisco selected Witherspoon in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, where he developed into a valuable secondary contributor. Over four seasons with the 49ers, he started 33 of 47 games and recorded 117 tackles, four interceptions and 24 passes defended.
Witherspoon signed with Seattle before being traded to Pittsburgh without appearing for the Seahawks. He spent two seasons with the Steelers, starting seven of 13 games played while recording 35 tackles and four interceptions.
The cornerback then signed consecutive one-year deals with the Los Angeles Rams, with his first season proving his most productive. He started all 17 games in that campaign, tallying 52 tackles and three interceptions in a career-best performance.
Across his professional career, Witherspoon appeared in 96 games with 64 starts, compiling 243 tackles, 13 interceptions and 60 passes defended across five NFL teams.
