A blaze erupted on a maintenance train at Manhattan’s Astor Place subway station in the early morning hours Tuesday, sending thick smoke through the station and prompting a swift emergency response. The fire resulted in injuries to seven MTA employees and five members of the Fire Department of New York, with emergency personnel quickly mobilizing to contain the situation.
The 4 and 6 subway lines experienced service disruptions as firefighters and emergency crews worked to extinguish the fire and treat the injured. The incident forced the temporary suspension of regular transit operations at the station while responders secured the scene and assessed damage.
Details surrounding the cause of the fire on the work train remained under investigation. Transit officials did not immediately provide additional information about the nature of injuries sustained by the affected workers and firefighters.
