Phil Collins faced a harrowing brush with mortality in 2024 when organ failure landed him unconscious in a Swiss hospital, forcing his manager to summon his five children—Lily, Joely, Simon, Nicolas and Matthew—to contemplate the possibility of his death. The former Genesis drummer and solo superstar revealed to The Sunday Times that medical staff were making critical decisions regarding whether to keep him on life support as his kidneys and other organs began shutting down.
Collins retained virtually no memory of the terrifying ordeal, but his children bore the emotional burden of preparing for what could have been their final moments together. “They were all worried that they wouldn’t see me again. It could all have gone so terribly wrong,” he acknowledged. His daughter Lily later told him she never thought she would have the opportunity to spend such meaningful time with him again.
The life-threatening health scare catalyzed a dramatic personal transformation for Collins, who immediately ceased consuming alcohol following his recovery. “I was very lucky to have come out of that,” he said, noting that he has remained sober since the incident. He subsequently spent months reconnecting with his children, experiences he described as “fantastic” and emphasized as irreplaceable opportunities.
Collins continues to manage ongoing health complications that require round-the-clock medical attention, including a live-in nurse to oversee his medication regimen. The 73-year-old has been transparent about his decades-long struggle with alcoholism, detailing his descent into substance abuse after retiring in his 2016 autobiography “Not Dead Yet.” His journey from one of the world’s best-selling recording artists—with over 100 million records sold globally and chart-topping hits including “In the Air Tonight” and “Another Day in Paradise”—to his battle with addiction serves as a cautionary account of the perils of excessive leisure and emotional emptiness.
