A 46-year-old homeless woman is facing second-degree attempted murder charges following a violent assault on a man in the North Miami Beach area Saturday morning. The victim sustained a skull fracture after being struck approximately 20 times with a stick, according to Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office investigators.
Authorities discovered the injured man shortly after 6:30 a.m. at Northeast Seventh Avenue and 167 Street following a call from fire rescue personnel. The victim told deputies he attempted to seize the weapon and grab the attacker’s clothing to halt the assault, the arrest report indicates.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported the man first to Jackson North Medical Center before transferring him to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center for treatment of his injuries. Deputies identified the suspect as Viola Sharonda Patterson and located her sitting alone at a nearby bus stop moments after the attack.
Patterson initially provided investigators with a false name, Melissa Michelle Ethridge, but fingerprint analysis revealed her true identity. She was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at approximately 6:10 p.m. Saturday and charged with second-degree attempted murder, obstruction by a disguised person, and providing false identification to law enforcement.
Her bond was set at $8,500. Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Zachary N. James is assigned to preside over the case.
