The Los Angeles Dodgers strengthened their rotation by acquiring Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers, adding another premiere arm to a championship contender. The deal, completed over the weekend, sends minor league prospects River Ryan, Brady Smith and Zyhir Hope to Detroit in return for the left-handed pitcher.
Skubal, who carries a 7-5 record this season with a 2.79 ERA and 116 strikeouts across 96 2/3 innings, expressed enthusiasm about joining Los Angeles. “I’m excited to be a Dodger,” Skubal said Saturday night. “I’m excited to get down there and meet all those guys and chase three championships in a row.”
Simultaneously, the New York Mets shipped right-hander Freddy Peralta to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for minor league assets including outfielder Aidan Smith, infielder Emilien Pitre and right-hander Gary Gill Hill. The trade reunites Peralta with a rotation-heavy Rays team that entered Sunday with the AL’s best record at 65-45.
With the trade deadline set for Monday at 6 p.m. EDT, both moves represent significant roster adjustments among contending clubs. Other notable pitchers and position players, including San Diego Padres closer Mason Miller and San Francisco Giants second baseman Luis Arraez, remain in play ahead of the deadline.
