Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Villalobos Outlines Changes for Upcoming School Year

Miami-Dade County Public Schools will begin its academic year on August 13, with district officials and families gathering at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex in Miami Gardens for back-to-school supply distributions. Students and parents collected backpacks and learning materials, with gently used uniforms also available to attendees during the event.

Incoming Superintendent Rafael Villalobos sat for an interview with Local 10 News’ Bridgette Matter to discuss priorities for the new term. Villalobos will assume leadership of the district in February, succeeding current Superintendent Jose Dotres. Among key topics addressed were modifications to the district’s meal service offerings.

Following a recent federal assessment, the school district will provide free breakfast and lunch at 121 qualifying schools. Villalobos noted that families at non-qualifying schools have been contacted directly to encourage them to apply for free or reduced-price meal benefits, allowing adequate preparation before classes begin.

The district continues to grapple with enrollment declines similar to those affecting neighboring Broward County. Villalobos attributed the steady decrease in student population to multiple contributing factors, though he did not specify individual causes during the interview.

Nine schools will close or be repurposed this school year as part of consolidation efforts. District officials have also urged drivers to exercise patience as school buses and associated traffic resume regular operations on local roads.

The district reminded parents to ensure their contact information remains current in school systems and thanked families for selecting Miami-Dade County schools.
