Two Florida Lifeguards Revive Unconscious 5-Year-Old Boy at Silver Beach

An unconscious 5-year-old boy was pulled from the Atlantic Ocean at Silver Beach in Volusia County, Florida, on July 30, where two trained lifeguards responded with immediate life-saving intervention. Dempsey Manhart was preparing to take a lunch break when the child’s family frantically signaled for help, with the boy already unresponsive in a family member’s arms. Manhart began assisting to bring the child from the water as his colleague Mackenzie Malone arrived and checked for a pulse, prompting both responders to initiate CPR.

Malone, in her fourth summer working as a lifeguard, identified a head wound on the child and realized the situation was critical. The duo’s coordinated CPR efforts proved effective, as the boy resumed breathing independently within moments. Malone credited her training and preparation for the successful outcome, telling FOX 35 Orlando that she was grateful their protocol resulted in the child’s survival and ability to return home to family.

Both lifeguards emphasized the importance of swimming in designated areas supervised by trained responders who can provide emergency assistance. Officials in Southern California reported that lifeguards conducted nearly 2,000 ocean rescues during a single weekend earlier this summer amid hazardous surf conditions and dangerous rip currents. The National Weather Service advises swimmers caught in rip currents to remain calm, swim parallel to shore, and signal for help if unable to escape.
