Chad Gable finally achieved a long-sought goal Sunday at SummerSlam, vanquishing Penta to claim the WWE Intercontinental Championship. The victory marked Gable’s first singles title after six previous unsuccessful attempts at championship gold.
The match saw Gable survive several of Penta’s signature offensive moves, including a Mexican Destroyer performed on the apron. Gable ultimately forced the victory by locking Penta in an ankle lock submission hold, prompting the challenger to tap out and surrender the title.
Overcome by the magnitude of the moment in front of his family and home crowd, Gable shed tears as the reality of his triumph set in. Penta subsequently placed the Intercontinental Championship around Gable’s waist while family members entered the ring to celebrate.
Penta’s title reign concludes after 153 days. He originally won the championship in March by defeating Dominik Mysterio. The next challenger for Gable’s newly won title remains undetermined.
