The Rosebuds Reading Collective has expanded from its modest beginnings into a robust initiative benefiting numerous women detained at Rikers Island. Through structured book discussions and creative writing sessions, the program fosters meaningful connections while providing incarcerated participants with outlets for personal expression and emotional growth.
Organizers designed the curriculum to address isolation and disconnection common among the facility’s female population. By centering literature as a vehicle for dialogue, the initiative encourages women to explore complex themes, share perspectives, and develop critical thinking skills during their incarceration.
The workshops combine classic and contemporary texts with guided writing exercises tailored to participants’ interests and experiences. Staff members report that members frequently credit the book club with providing mental stimulation, hope, and a sense of belonging during their time at the facility.
