Russian forces launched a major assault on the Ukrainian capital overnight into Saturday, deploying ballistic missiles and drones that resulted in at least three deaths and injuries to more than a dozen others, according to local officials. Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko reported significant damage across multiple city districts from the coordinated strike.
A five-story apartment complex in the Solomianskyi District sustained extensive damage from debris, with occupants feared trapped inside and fires burning in the courtyard area. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a separate residential building experienced partial collapse affecting its lower floors, also leaving residents potentially stranded, Klitschko said via Telegram.
Additional destruction struck the Darnytskyi district, where warehouse structures ignited during the bombardment. The assault marked the second major Russian attack within two days, following Thursday’s widespread offensive that killed 10 civilians and wounded over 50 across Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has intensified calls for additional Patriot air defense systems to counter Russian missile attacks, citing ongoing strikes as justification for enhanced weaponry from Western allies. He noted Friday that discussions with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and earlier meetings with President Donald Trump in Washington were productive regarding military support needs.
Trump stated in July at a NATO summit in Ankara that the U.S. would license Ukraine to manufacture Patriot systems independently. However, during a Friday Cabinet meeting at Camp David, Maryland, Trump indicated he had not finalized a decision on the commitment.
