Cuba Opens Door to Private Pharmacies to Address Medicine Shortage

The Cuban government unveiled a new initiative Wednesday to permit private pharmacies to establish operations across the island, marking a significant shift in how medications will be distributed to citizens. The move comes as state-run pharmacies have faced severe stock shortages and empty shelves, leaving residents with limited legal options to obtain necessary prescriptions.

Severe medicine scarcity intensified following the 2020 pandemic combined with stringent U.S. sanctions that strained the nation’s economy. State pharmacy shelves that once regularly stocked affordable medications for the general population have since become largely barren, forcing many Cubans into an underground market where prices reach levels far beyond typical affordability.

In 2021, the government relaxed import rules to allow residents to bring medicines into Cuba in substantial quantities, though selling them remained illegal. Despite the prohibition, authorities have largely overlooked street-level pharmaceutical commerce, particularly along commercial corridors like Galaino Street in Centro Habana where unlicensed vendors openly sell medications alongside household goods.

Cuban officials have pledged that existing state pharmacies will continue operating alongside new private establishments rather than being eliminated. Residents interviewed expressed optimism that increased pharmaceutical availability through private vendors would reduce reliance on black-market transactions and restore access to medications at more reasonable prices.
