Cameron Young carded a bogey-free 61 at the Rocket Classic on Friday, equaling the Detroit Golf Club course record and moving to 10-under par for the tournament. The performance left him tied atop the leaderboard with Patrick Cantlay and Patrick Fishburn, each of whom shot 66 in the second round.
Young’s dominant display included seven birdies in his opening eight holes, prompting him to consider a run at the lowest PGA Tour score ever recorded. He cooled considerably over the back nine, adding just two birdies and ultimately missing an opportunity to challenge Jim Furyk’s 18-year-old record of 58.
The world’s third-ranked player, who owns three victories this season, previously shot 59 at the 2024 Travelers Championship. “I was thinking 55” early in his round, Young said, before acknowledging the missed opportunities that prevented him from securing multiple career sub-60 rounds on tour.
Matt Wallace (64) and Rickie Fowler (68) trailed the leaders by two shots. Fowler briefly seized the lead at 11-under before stumbling with three bogeys on his back nine, including a three-putt from 24 feet at the 11th hole. The six-time PGA Tour winner, whose most recent victory came at the 2023 Rocket Classic, recovered with a birdie on the finishing hole.
First-round leader Peter Malnati fell one stroke behind the leaders after following an opening 61 with a 71. Xander Schauffele (66) occupied that group as well, while Hideki Matsuyama (68) extended his active cuts streak to 30 consecutive events.
Matt Kuchar registered his seventh career ace, striking a 9-iron from 156 yards on the par-3 fifth hole. The veteran invited a young spectator to retrieve the ball, which he signed and gifted to the child.
Notable casualties in the cut at 3-under included U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark (74) at 5-over, seven-ranked Chris Gotterup at 1-over after snapping a 14-event streak, and FedEx Cup standings member Akshay Bhatia (71) also at 1-over.
