Ashley Vargas-Fonseca, a recent graduate of George T. Baker Aviation Technical School in Miami-Dade County, has been named the inaugural recipient of Florida Power & Light’s Drones in School Scholarship, which awards $5,000 to recognize academic excellence and demonstrated commitment to drone technology. The announcement came Wednesday evening as the utility company highlighted her accomplishments in competitive robotics.
Vargas-Fonseca led her robotics team to first-place finishes at both the Florida Drones in School State Championship and the Drones in School National Championship through her participation in multiple competitions. Her selection reflects FPL’s effort to identify and support young innovators pursuing advanced technical skills in the burgeoning drone sector.
Beginning this fall, Vargas-Fonseca will enroll at Santa Fe College in Gainesville with plans to pursue a degree in electrical engineering. She expressed relief that the scholarship would ease financial pressure as she transitions to higher education, describing the award as a significant weight off her shoulders regarding tuition costs.
The scholarship program represents part of FPL’s broader initiative to strengthen STEAM education across Florida and cultivate the next generation of technological innovators within its service area.
