First lady Melania Trump’s office revealed on Thursday that a fifth cohort of children from Ukraine and Russia has been successfully returned to their families as part of an ongoing humanitarian initiative. The announcement marks continued progress in what the White House characterized as a compassion-driven mission transcending geopolitical tensions between the two nations.
Trump emphasized in a statement that the reunification efforts prioritize children’s welfare above international conflict. “While diplomacy and peace-building are important to this effort, they are surpassed by our collective ability to place children above international disputes,” she said, adding that her office continues coordinating with Moscow and Kyiv to facilitate additional safe returns.
The formal reunification program launched in October 2025 following President Donald Trump’s August 2025 summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, during which he delivered a note from the first lady. According to White House records, approximately 30 Ukrainian children have been reunited with their families since the program’s inception.
The latest group represents the first successful returns since April, when Trump publicly acknowledged the logistical and diplomatic challenges inherent to the effort. She pledged at that time to continue leveraging her position to restore families fractured by the ongoing conflict that began in February 2022.
The war has claimed thousands of civilian lives, including many children, with 2024 marking the deadliest year of the conflict according to United Nations data. The White House characterized Trump’s leadership as instrumental in bridging political divisions to advance humanitarian objectives.
