Author JK Rowling weighed in Wednesday on a contentious incident that unfolded at an Indiana Fever-Seattle Storm matchup, expressing strong support for fans who faced harassment while advocating against transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. Rowling’s comments on social media defended the protesters, calling them “heroines” for their peaceful demonstration against what she characterized as unfair athletic competition.
The controversy erupted Tuesday during the Seattle game when two women’s rights advocates were confronted by Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton, who allegedly used profanity while dismissing their position. Independent journalist Brandi Kruse, present at the arena, corroborated accounts of the interaction. The Storm organization subsequently suspended Keaton and issued a formal apology, stating that all attendees deserve to feel welcome and respected.
Sophie Cunningham, the Fever star whose comments about biological sex differences sparked the initial debate, released her own statement Wednesday night. She emphasized inclusivity while defending the right to hold differing viewpoints, stating that people can disagree respectfully and praised the young protesters for their activism.
Additional video evidence showed a male spectator joining the harassment, directing derogatory remarks at the protesters. Rowling’s post criticized those attempting to silence women advocating for sports fairness, characterizing their behavior as fundamentally unreasonable.
