California Lifeguard Hailed as Hero After Rescuing 10-Year-Old From Treacherous Surf

A father whose son nearly drowned off the California coast has expressed profound gratitude toward the teenage lifeguard who plunged into dangerous surf to save the boy’s life. Sumit Rai praised the selfless actions of 16-year-old Ryder Williams, who entered the water at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz despite hazardous conditions including 10-foot waves and treacherous currents on Saturday.

Nathaniel Rai, 10, was standing in ankle-deep water when he suddenly lost his footing and was pulled seaward by powerful swells. The incident, which unfolded approximately 60 miles south of San Francisco, was captured on video and subsequently gained attention from President Donald Trump. Rai, who was in Dallas at the time, learned of the incident from his son during a phone call that evening.

Williams spotted the boy struggling in shallow water, radioed for assistance, and immediately entered the surf. According to his account, he was unable to pull Nathaniel out after the first wave struck because the boy had become limp and the waves were exerting tremendous force. A second lifeguard and several bystanders assisted in the rescue effort.

California State Parks reported the boy was swept approximately 15 yards into the ocean before Williams made contact with him. Nathaniel sustained no serious injuries and was released to his family following medical evaluation, though he experienced respiratory effects and continues to process the psychological trauma of the incident.

Williams said he was grateful for the opportunity to reunite the child with his family and emphasized his love for his profession. Rai said he intends to thank Williams directly, describing the lifeguard’s actions as something he could never repay.
