Former LSU Football Player Arrested on Assault Charge; Mother Attributes Behavior to Head Injury

Demetrius Byrd, 40, faced a judge Tuesday on an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge stemming from an incident Monday aboard a Miami-Dade Transit bus in Miami Beach. Byrd, who once starred at Miami Central Senior High School and played for LSU’s 2005 national championship team, allegedly brandished a multi-tool blade and threatened another passenger near Abbot Avenue and Island Creek Drive. His mother, Sharon Byrd, contends that a traumatic brain injury from a car accident—which occurred just before he would have entered the NFL draft—triggered the mental health crisis underlying his current legal troubles.

According to law enforcement, Byrd became disruptive on the bus, and when a male passenger attempted to de-escalate the situation, the confrontation intensified. Authorities allege that Byrd opened a silver multi-tool he carried in his right pocket to a blade position and advanced toward the victim while asking if he wanted to die. The bus driver summoned police, leading to Byrd’s arrest at the scene.

Sharon Byrd expressed concern that her son requires psychiatric intervention rather than incarceration, describing his mindset as characterized by paranoia and persecution beliefs. She emphasized that those who know him recognize his behavior is uncharacteristic, insisting there is nothing inherently violent about his nature. Despite the gravity of the charges, she said she remains committed to supporting him through treatment and recovery.
