Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., expressed regret Wednesday over his reluctance to publicly advocate for the possibility that COVID-19 originated in a laboratory during a contentious Senate hearing with Dr. Anthony Fauci. The Pennsylvania Democrat told Fox News Digital that he should have voiced his views more assertively when the lab-leak hypothesis was widely dismissed as a “fringe” concept.
At the Capitol Hill hearing, Fetterman acknowledged his own hesitation to champion the lab-origin theory after it became associated with right-wing political movements. Despite his personal belief that the theory warranted serious examination, he said he avoided public statements supporting it due to partisan concerns about how the idea was being characterized.
Fetterman told Fauci he was not attacking him personally but rather holding himself accountable for his cautious approach throughout the pandemic response. He urged that future crises be handled without allowing political affiliation to determine which scientific questions receive consideration.
“It’s a virus,” Fetterman said. “The only side is, really, Americans versus the virus in the future.”
During his Fox News Digital interview, Fetterman predicted Fauci would invoke the Fifth Amendment, which the former chief medical advisor ultimately did 111 times. Fetterman also acknowledged the pandemic’s dual toll, noting that while many died from COVID-19, countless businesses were destroyed—describing the latter as “a different kind of death.”
