Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday he intends to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York this September, dismissing repeated demands from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani that he be arrested upon arrival. Following a White House meeting with President Donald Trump, Netanyahu told Fox News host Sean Hannity that he would not be deterred by the mayor’s public calls for law enforcement action against him.
Mamdani, who has long criticized Netanyahu’s military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, recently labeled the Israeli leader a “war criminal” and “the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people.” The mayor acknowledged that New York City lacks legal authority to arrest Netanyahu under an International Criminal Court warrant but urged federal officials to pursue the matter.
Netanyahu characterized Mamdani’s rhetoric as divisive and inflammatory, accusing him of deliberately stoking resentment between New York communities. “I’m going to speak the truth in front of this hate-spewing elected official who’s pitting one group of New Yorkers against the others,” Netanyahu said during the Hannity interview. Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio joined Mamdani’s call for Netanyahu’s arrest.
The Israeli prime minister launched a sharp critique of the International Criminal Court, describing it as a “corrupt, evil organization” that applies inconsistent standards. He questioned why the court has charged him but not Hamas or Hezbollah, and warned that the ICC’s broad reach could classify American military personnel and political leaders as war criminals.
Netanyahu described his Tuesday meeting with Trump as among the strongest he has held with a U.S. president, emphasizing shared concerns about preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He indicated the two nations were aligned on Middle East policy objectives, whether pursued through diplomatic or other means.
