French Authorities Launch Murder Investigation After Man Finds Five Deceased Newborns in Home

Authorities in Orange, France have launched a criminal murder investigation after a 32-year-old man uncovered the remains of five newborns concealed in cardboard boxes within his residence, prosecutors announced Monday. The discovery occurred when the man searched his home following an argument with his wife over the contents of the boxes after she gave birth to a baby boy at home the previous day.

The 32-year-old woman was hospitalized Monday after experiencing abdominal pain during the dispute with her husband. She had not disclosed her pregnancy to him until late in gestation, despite his awareness that something was amiss, according to prosecution statements. The couple, who already have two children ages eight and nine, had no previous documented domestic issues.

While the woman received medical care, her husband examined the contested boxes and found the five deceased infants. A forensic pathologist determined the remains belonged to five newborns, with four represented by skeletal material and one showing advanced decomposition. The remains had been in the boxes for an extended period, investigators noted.

Authorities have ordered comprehensive autopsies and laboratory testing on all remains. Child welfare services were directed to evaluate the health of the couple’s two older children, while a provisional placement order was issued for the newborn boy pending judicial review. The mother, still hospitalized, has not yet cooperated with investigators, prosecutors said.

Neighbors described the couple as “charming” and “normal people,” with the wife serving as a stay-at-home parent and the husband employed outside the home. The man claimed he was unaware of any prior pregnancies his wife may have experienced.
