French Firefighters Contain Massive Wildfire as Heat Threatens to Reignite Blaze

Crews battling a sprawling wildfire in southwest France successfully prevented the blaze from spreading overnight Tuesday, though deteriorating weather conditions posed an imminent threat to their containment efforts. The fire, which has consumed 420 square kilometers (162 square miles) since erupting near Saumos last week, remained stable as of 6 a.m. following a period of relatively calm conditions, according to the Gironde prefecture.

Emergency responders extinguished multiple flare-ups detected north of Le Porge and in dune areas adjacent to Cap Ferret during overnight operations. These incidents, located along the Atlantic coast region west of Bordeaux, were quickly brought under control before they could expand, authorities confirmed.

The unpredictable fire has devastated an area roughly four times the size of Paris and forced approximately 220,000 residents to evacuate their homes. Officials warned that smoldering debris and declining humidity levels could spark fresh ignitions despite temporary gains in containment.

Firefighters and military personnel resumed constructing defensive firebreaks early Tuesday, establishing 103 kilometers (64 miles) of barriers designed to halt further advancement. The operation has injured 93 firefighters to date, the prefecture reported.

Transportation disruptions persisted as sections of the A63 highway remained closed and rail service south of Bordeaux was suspended, except routes toward Toulouse. Meanwhile, displaced residents from a separate fire in the neighboring Landes region, which affected more than 30,000 people, began returning home after President Emmanuel Macron announced Monday that blaze had been contained.
