The University of Virginia and former women’s basketball coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton have resolved their legal dispute through a settlement agreement, the parties announced Monday. Neither side disclosed specific terms of the deal, though both indicated satisfaction with the resolution.
Agugua-Hamilton was terminated on April 4, just seven days after guiding the Cavaliers to their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2000. During her tenure at Virginia, she compiled a 70-58 record, including a 29-42 mark in ACC conference competition.
The Cavaliers achieved an unlikely tournament run as a double-digit seed, becoming the first such team to reach the regional semifinals since 2022. They upset No. 2 seed Iowa in double overtime during the second round before ultimately falling to TCU, marking the first time a First Four team advanced that far in the tournament.
“The recent resolution allows everyone to move forward,” Agugua-Hamilton said in a statement. “I am proud of my career and grateful to every player and coach whose path has crossed mine. My passion for coaching has always been about making a positive difference in the lives of young people, and that remains unchanged.”
Prior to joining Virginia, Agugua-Hamilton coached Missouri State from 2020 to 2022, compiling a 74-15 record that included two NCAA Tournament appearances.
