Kelly Ripa is sidelined from her broadcasting duties following gum graft surgery, a procedure designed to address receding or thinning gums. Her husband and co-host Mark Consuelos announced the development during Monday’s episode of “Live with Kelly and Mark,” explaining that Ripa had finally completed a dental intervention her dentist recommended five years prior.
Consuelos recounted how Ripa had initially joked about delaying the procedure, quipping to her dental professional that she wouldn’t still be working in television by the time five years elapsed. The gum graft surgery typically involves grafting tissue to areas where gums have receded, according to Cleveland Clinic standards for the treatment.
The recovery protocol requires Ripa to refrain from speaking, a particularly challenging directive for someone known for her conversational prowess on daytime television. Guest Nick Jonas humorously noted the irony of silencing someone celebrated for constant dialogue, drawing laughter from Consuelos, who acknowledged the difficulty of keeping his wife compliant with medical directions.
Consuelos revealed that Ripa’s biggest struggle during recovery involves resisting the urge to inspect her healing gums, with the host repeatedly asking him to check her progress. He described positioning himself to examine the surgical site without directly touching her lip, providing reassurance about the healing trajectory.
Despite her legendary high pain tolerance—Ripa typically avoids anesthesia at dental appointments—Consuelos emphasized this particular procedure has caused significant discomfort. A representative for the show confirmed Ripa will remain absent from “Live” for approximately one week during her recuperation.
