Open Champion Ryan Fox Negotiates Special Permission to Carry Claret Jug Aboard Commercial Flight

Transporting one of sports’ most prestigious trophies proved unexpectedly complicated for Ryan Fox following his victory at The Open Championship. The New Zealand golfer won the Claret Jug at Royal Birkdale and faced an immediate logistical challenge when attempting to board a commercial flight from Manchester to London the day after his triumph.

Fox passed through airport security with the historic trophy safely encased in protective packaging but encountered resistance at the gate when staff initially indicated the artifact would need to be checked beneath the aircraft. The prospect of surrendering golf’s oldest trophy to baggage handlers during what would be a brief flight prompted Fox to make his case directly to the gate agent.

During an appearance on “The Smylie Show,” Fox recounted his conversation with airline personnel. He explained that he approached the check-in desk with his cargo and requested permission to carry the Claret Jug aboard as an additional piece of carry-on luggage, revealing its identity and his championship status when questioned.

The gate agent approved his request without hesitation. Fox attributed his success partly to other travelers recognizing him during the security process, which may have validated his claim to ownership of the prized artifact.

Adding another layer of intrigue to the unusual circumstances, Fox discovered he had been seated directly behind Cameron Young, who finished runner-up after Fox made birdie on the 72nd hole at Birkdale.
