Romania Downs Third Russian Drone in Three Days as NATO Scrambles F-16s

Romanian F-16 fighter jets launched from the Fetești airbase intercepted and destroyed a suspected Russian drone that penetrated the country’s airspace on Sunday morning, according to statements from NATO and Romanian officials. The incident represents the third such violation within a 72-hour period by the Eastern European nation, which holds membership in both NATO and the European Union. The aircraft engaged the unmanned aerial vehicle at 10:13 a.m. over Romanian territorial waters in the Sulina-Chilia region of the Black Sea.

President Nicusor Dan confirmed that one of the previously intercepted drones has been identified as a Shahed-type system, the weapons platform Russia has deployed extensively in its ongoing military campaign against Ukraine. The latest downing was conducted under NATO’s operational coordination through its Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe command structure. Col. Martin O’Donnell, a spokesperson for SHAPE, characterized the interception as the fourth recent successful defense against airspace violations, noting that Romanian pilots had also shot down a drone above Estonian territory in May.

Romania has equipped itself with the MEROPS counter-drone system, a relatively cost-effective defensive platform that launches three-foot unmanned interceptors designed to neutralize incoming Shahed variants and similar threats. The acquisition reflects broader NATO efforts to fortify its eastern frontier against escalating drone operations. A May incident in which a Russian drone struck an apartment building in eastern Romania, injuring two residents, underscored the dangers posed by the spillover from Russia’s Ukraine campaign.

President Dan declared the repeated violations “inadmissible and intolerable,” emphasizing coordination with alliance partners in response. Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot expressed solidarity with Romania, noting that one downing has been confirmed as a Russian Shahed drone and reaffirming Belgium’s commitment through 300 troops stationed on NATO’s eastern flank. Russia and Ukrainian forces have conducted successive drone operations affecting Romania and other NATO members since the February 2022 invasion commenced.
