Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu leveled sharp criticism at New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a television interview Sunday, asserting the city official is deliberately stoking division among New Yorkers through inflammatory anti-Israel statements. Netanyahu told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo that Mamdani, a democratic socialist, is failing in his responsibility to represent all residents regardless of religion or ethnicity.
The Israeli leader claimed Jewish Americans in New York have expressed heightened concern about their safety in the city, pointing to recent violent incidents as evidence of a dangerous climate. Netanyahu drew a connection between Mamdani’s recent remarks and a stabbing attack outside a Manhattan synagogue in which a 51-year-old man allegedly assaulted a Jewish victim with a screwdriver while shouting religious phrases.
Mamdani had urged federal authorities to arrest Netanyahu under an International Criminal Court warrant last week, calling the Israeli prime minister a “war criminal” and “the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people.” The New York City mayor has repeatedly stated Netanyahu is unwelcome in the city.
Despite Mamdani’s opposition, Netanyahu confirmed his intention to attend the United Nations General Assembly beginning in September to address the international body. He dismissed concerns about the mayor’s stance, saying he has consistently attended the annual gathering throughout his tenure as prime minister barring unforeseen security complications.
Mamdani’s office had not issued a public response to Netanyahu’s comments as of publication.
