President Donald Trump took the stage Friday evening at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, shelving the combative remarks he had prepared before an armed attack forced the postponement of the annual gathering in April. The revised address pivoted toward themes of unity and appreciation, though Trump maintained his characteristic criticism of journalists and media outlets throughout the evening’s program.
The president returned to address the assembled room of journalists and government officials just months after Cole Allen, an armed suspect, opened fire at the original event in an apparent assassination attempt. Trump acknowledged the shift in his prepared remarks, telling the audience that his initial speech would have been severe before noting that circumstances prompted him to reconsider his approach.
Trump delivered an extended address lasting one hour and four minutes, opening with his traditional entrance music and quickly pivoting to humor about pursuing a third term. He devoted significant attention to commending the Secret Service for its role during both the April attack and its ongoing protective responsibilities.
The president interspersed his remarks with barbs aimed at Democratic figures including California Governor Gavin Newsom, former Vice President Kamala Harris, and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, among others. Trump also directed jokes toward members of his own cabinet, including references to Robert F. Kennedy and criticisms leveled at Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer regarding Middle East policy.
The WHCA recognized U.S. Secret Service Officer Victor Gonzales for his actions during the assassination attempt, with former association president Weijia Jiang presenting the award. Jiang highlighted Gonzales’ positioning himself in direct danger and continuing to engage Allen despite sustaining gunfire that struck his protective vest.
Allen, a computer scientist from Torrance, California, traveled from Los Angeles to Washington by Amtrak before the attack. He has pleaded not guilty to four charges including attempted assassination of the president, discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, transporting a firearm across state lines, and assaulting a federal officer with a deadly weapon.
Trump announced plans to return to next year’s dinner and concluded with a declaration that he is running for election in 2028, donning a campaign hat bearing that year’s designation.
