Kaepernick and Springsteen Honored With ACLU Civil Rights Award

Colin Kaepernick, the former NFL quarterback whose kneeling during the national anthem sparked a national conversation about racial justice, was awarded the American Civil Liberties Union’s Ralph Ellison Award for Defenders of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties in the Arts, Business, Science and Sports on Friday night. Rock musician Bruce Springsteen shared the honor at the Washington ceremony.

A decade has passed since Kaepernick first took a knee to protest police violence and racial inequality during games. His actions prompted similar demonstrations by teammate Eric Reid and others, though they also generated substantial backlash from political figures, NFL ownership, and fellow players.

During his acceptance speech, Kaepernick emphasized that the civil rights movement depends on concrete action rather than rhetoric. “When we look back at this moment, it will not be the speeches that change the direction of history,” he said, calling on Americans to commit to building schools and communities while defending the rights of others.

Kaepernick and Reid filed grievances alleging collusion against the NFL in 2017, contending they had been blacklisted from the league. The dispute concluded with a settlement agreement reached in 2019.

ACLU President Deborah Archer praised Kaepernick’s willingness to endure personal consequences for his principles. “His peaceful protest was met with extraordinary personal sacrifice. He lost the career he spent his life building,” Archer said, noting the relentless criticism and hostility he faced.

Springsteen closed the awards ceremony with a solo performance of “Streets of Minneapolis.” The event was hosted by actress Laverne Cox.
