Ted Danson Reflects on Personal Struggles During Final Years of ‘Cheers,’ Says He ‘Messed Up’ His Life

Ted Danson has offered candid insights into his personal struggles during the twilight of his iconic role on “Cheers,” disclosing that his life was in disarray as the beloved sitcom approached its 1993 conclusion. During a recent podcast episode titled “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” the 78-year-old actor acknowledged that his emotional state overshadowed the show’s finale, saying he was too consumed by personal crises to properly process the series ending.

The actor revealed he was undergoing significant personal transformation during his final year on the hit show, describing his journey toward emotional maturity and honesty. Danson explained he made regular trips to Long Beach to work with a mentor whose guidance provided spiritual and therapeutic support as he sought to reshape his values and behavior during this transitional period.

Danson starred as bartender Sam Malone for the entirety of “Cheers,” appearing in all 273 episodes across 11 seasons from 1982 to 1993. He made the deliberate decision to exit the series when his personal growth prompted him to explore whether he possessed range as an actor beyond the character that defined his career.

Since leaving “Cheers,” Danson has demonstrated versatility across multiple television projects, including roles in “Becker,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” and “The Good Place.” He is currently starring in Netflix’s “Man on the Inside,” portraying a retired professor turned undercover spy in a retirement home.
