Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts declared Saturday that Shohei Ohtani will remain sidelined from pitching activities until his troublesome left knee reaches full strength. The two-way superstar canceled a tentative bullpen session, with Roberts emphasizing the organization will not advance Ohtani’s rehabilitation timeline prematurely.
Ohtani has not appeared in a game on the mound since July 3, following a lubricant injection administered before the All-Star break. A bullpen session Wednesday in Philadelphia revealed setbacks, as the reigning four-time MVP experienced what Roberts characterized as “a little bit of regression” after throwing approximately 30 pitches off the mound.
Despite the pitching limitations, Ohtani continues batting regularly without complications from the knee condition. The Dodgers entered Saturday’s matchup against the New York Mets with baseball’s best record at 66-38 and an 11-game divisional advantage over Arizona in the NL West.
Ohtani’s season pitching statistics include an 8-2 record with a 1.79 ERA and 95 strikeouts across 14 starts totaling 85 2/3 innings. At the plate, the slugger was batting .286 with 22 home runs, 61 RBIs and a .920 OPS entering Saturday.
The Dodgers provided updates on other injured arms, with Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell throwing 49 pitches in a Triple-A rehab appearance Friday, allowing one run and two hits over 2 2/3 innings. Snell has been out since May 9 with loose bodies in his pitching elbow.
Star closer Edwin Díaz, recovering from right elbow surgery, is scheduled for another Triple-A appearance Sunday with expected activation from the injured list Wednesday if his performance progresses favorably. Tyler Glasnow, sidelined since May 8 with low back spasms, completed a simulated inning Friday throwing 25 pitches and may begin a rehab assignment following another simulated game next week.
