Kim Makes PGA Tour History With Sub-60 Round at 3M Open

Michael Kim etched his name into PGA Tour lore Friday at the 3M Open by carding a 59, joining just 15 other competitors in the tour’s storied history to accomplish the feat. The 33-year-old golfer secured the historic round with a dramatic 24-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole, sinking the putt to the bottom of the cup and punctuating the achievement with emphatic fist pumps.

Kim approached the final hole with clear intention, having told himself moments before the putt to focus on distance control. “I tend to leave those short when it’s that uphill and I just, last thing was just get it there, just don’t leave it short,” he explained after the round. Throughout the latter stages of play, Kim remained acutely aware of the historic opportunity presenting itself, mentally preparing himself to seize the moment rather than relying on chance.

The golfer’s remarkable 18 unfolded through multiple scoring bursts, beginning with five consecutive birdies starting at the third hole. After posting par on the eighth, Kim added three birdies in four holes before closing with four straight birdies to cap his historic performance. His putter proved exceptionally sharp, with eight of his 11 birdies coming from distances exceeding 10 feet.

Kim’s 59 propelled him to a three-shot lead over Ben Kohles heading into the weekend. Despite the historic accomplishment, Kim remained grounded about the work ahead, noting he had completed only half the tournament. Kim’s round marked the fourth sub-60 score on the PGA Tour since 2024, following Jake Knapp’s 59 in the first round of this year’s Cognizant Classic. Jim Furyk holds the all-time PGA Tour record with a 58 at the 2016 Travelers Championship.
