Jackson Koivun, a 21-year-old PGA Tour rookie, surged to the top of the 3M Open leaderboard Saturday with an impressive third-round 61 at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota. His three-stroke advantage at 20-under par positions him as the clear favorite heading into Sunday’s final round.
Koivun’s exceptional scoring came courtesy of a tournament-record 28 on the back nine, fueled by two eagles and six birdies on a day when warm, calm conditions favored aggressive play. The young golfer made a 12-foot eagle putt on the 12th hole and converted a 14-foot eagle attempt on the 18th to capitalize on two of the course’s three par-5 holes.
Emiliano Grillo and Ben Kohles occupy second place at 17 under after each shot 65, while Michael Brennan’s 63 moved him into a tie for fourth alongside Chandler Phillips, both at 16 under. Denny McCarthy, Billy Horschel and Michael Kim sit in sixth place at 15 under.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler trails Koivun by six strokes, sharing ninth place alongside Davis Thompson, Seamus Power and Brian Harman. Koivun, the top-ranked amateur following his college tenure at Auburn, turned professional last month after the U.S. Open and posted a 64 Thursday and 68 Friday before his record-setting Saturday effort.
