Richardson and Lyles Claim 100-Meter Titles at U.S. Track Championships

Sha’Carri Richardson and Noah Lyles captured victories in the 100-meter dash Friday evening at the U.S. track and field championships held at Icahn Stadium in New York. Richardson, 26, overcame a sluggish beginning to clock 10.77 seconds, edging training partner Kayla White by 0.13 seconds. The sprinter, who dealt with injuries throughout the previous year, expressed satisfaction with her performance and recovery.

“It feels phenomenal to be back in a better place — healthy, mentally, physically, emotionally,” Richardson told Peacock after her victory. “It shows that hard work pays off.” She captured her third national title in the 100 meters and is building momentum following her gold medal performance at the 2023 world championships and silver finish at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Lyles, the defending Olympic champion at 32 years old, mounted a decisive comeback from an early deficit to secure the men’s race in 9.79 seconds, matching his personal best. Second place went to Ronnie Baker, while Kenny Bednarek finished third. The victory marks Lyles’ third national 100-meter title.

Lyles celebrated by autographing a trading card bearing his likeness, which he said he would present to a devoted supporter. The sprinter indicated he is preparing for next year’s world championships and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, hinting at elevated intensity in his training regimen moving forward.

In other championship events, Erin Marsh dominated the heptathlon with 6,059 points, surpassing Timara Chapman by 38 points. Garrett Scantling narrowly prevailed in the decathlon over Kyle Garland by 95 points. Euphenie Andre won the women’s triple jump, and Tyus Wilson claimed the men’s high jump title.
