California Man Arrested in Mother’s Death Following Heated Confrontation

Authorities in Orange County arrested a 36-year-old man Thursday on suspicion of murder in the death of his mother, Angela Caprioli, 61, who was found dead at a residence in Laguna Beach. Officers from the Laguna Beach Police Department discovered Caprioli at a home in the 1300 block of Dunning Drive shortly after 11 a.m. Monday during a death investigation. The suspect, identified as Safford Wolfson, had been under investigation as a person of interest since the body’s discovery.

A neighbor provided investigators with crucial details about interactions between Wolfson and his mother in the days preceding the killing. Dustin Pettit recalled witnessing what he characterized as a hostile exchange between the two at the residence, describing Caprioli as visibly upset before she retreated indoors and shut the door forcefully. Pettit also noted that Wolfson had been residing at the home for approximately six months prior to the incident.

Pettit told media outlets that Wolfson maintained a withdrawn demeanor within the neighborhood, spending time smoking and playing guitar but rarely engaging in conversation with neighbors. According to social media records reviewed by news outlets, Wolfson’s accounts identify the user as transgender. In a 2024 Facebook post attributed to Wolfson, he wrote, “Not even my mom wants to hang out with me man… talk about lame-o!” Investigators said the circumstances of Caprioli’s death remain under active investigation.
