Busch Gardens’ Kumba Roller Coaster to Close After 33-Year Run

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay announced that Kumba, one of Florida’s most recognizable roller coasters, will cease operations permanently on August 2, concluding a 33-year tenure at the theme park. The decision has triggered widespread nostalgia among coaster enthusiasts who have ridden the attraction since its 1993 debut.

When Kumba first opened, it held multiple distinction records as Florida’s tallest, fastest, and longest roller coaster, while also boasting the world’s tallest vertical loop at the time. The nearly three-minute ride features a 135-foot drop, speeds of 60 mph, and seven inversions that have made it a staple for thrill seekers across decades.

The park plans to replace Kumba with Kumba’s Revenge as part of a $100 million initiative to expand its collection of high-adrenaline attractions. Busch Gardens has designated the final weeks of operation as Kumba’s “Final Roar,” giving guests until August 2 to experience the coaster one last time.

Fans have expressed emotional reactions across social media, with many sharing decades of personal memories tied to the ride. Some recalled childhood field trips, while others described the coaster as a rite of passage for Florida residents and expressed hope that its successor would honor the original’s legendary status.
